‘Disavow Links’ is Bing’s latest addition to Webmaster Tools. The tool allows you to alert the search engine to links that seem low quality or spammy to you. Submission of URLs that link to you, but seem untrustworthy signals Bing that you wish to distance yourself from these sites. You will find the tool under Bing Webmaster Tools’ ‘Configure My Site’ area.
According to Duane Forrester, a senior product manager at Bing, website owners have been asking for disavow links option for a long time and the new tool is the first step in the direction. The tool allows the search engine to better understand website owners’ views on links pointing towards their sites. Regardless of whether you are a SEO writer or a cosmetics seller, you want your site to be associated with authoritative sites, not low quality ones and submission of untrustworthy URLs is a concrete step in the direction.
The act of link disavowal is a signal to Bing. In case you end up disavowing a good link, it will not necessarily hurt your ranking as the search engine has the flexibility to react to these signals as it deems fit.
